Professional Doms/Dommes as a Career? Kathy Kulig Guest Blog

Note from Cris: I'm thrilled to have New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kathy Kulig on my blog today. In her just released book, RED TAPE, a professional Domme features in her cast of characters. I asked her to give us some info about Domination as a career, so if this subject intrigues you, come back here next week for an exclusive excerpt of RED TAPE.

Professional domination as a career has become more mainstream as public awareness of the BDSM lifestyle widens and slowly, still very slowly, embraces this erotic lifestyle of Dominance and submission. There are a lot of misconceptions that only education and an open mind will alleviate.

Obviously, the intricacies of the power exchange will never be understood, explored or accepted by some and that’s fine. For others who wish to explore privately, a professional Dom/Domme may be an option when a partner is not available. Or if they are not looking for a relationship, they many use a professional for only the experience. They may wish to learn “hands on” techniques about the lifestyle to share with a partner. Or perhaps their partner is not interested in exploring within this realm and a professional Dom/Domme will give them that outlet and release. There may be many other reasons why a person connects with a professional.

As a part-time job, earning $200-300 per hour for experienced Doms/Dommes and not having sex, it’s not a bad way to earn extra cash. Some have private dungeons, while others use the facilities of public dungeons. I know of a Dominatrix who has a separate apartment that she uses specifically for her dungeon. Her partner who is a switch (male) usually is present to assist her. Partly as her security guard and partly because her clients enjoy his presence. The Domme also uses his help with the equipment. She has only had a rare occasion where a client wasn’t interested in the power exchange, but had made an appointment specifically to be a ballbuster. She managed to get the upper hand in those unfortunate situations.

Some young women get into the sex trades like stripping and pro-domination for the quick money, but it’s hard work. They can earn a lot of money part-time and take care of children, go to school or work as an artist.

Working at a club may be a better option for some. A private dungeon can be very expensive to set up. The dungeon furnishings can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars and the fetish wear and other supplies are expensive too. (A pro-domme will need fetish wear and some of her own ‘tools of the trade’ like floggers, ropes, canes, etc. for the club scene too.)

A pro-domme is not prostitution and not stripping. They get to keep their clothes on and don’t have vaginal intercourse like a prostitute. But they do sexual restraining and torture to men and women.
Before you decide that this is your ideal part-time job, you need experience. You can’t just slip on a red corset and black leather skirt and start wielding a flogger and tie people up. You could cut off circulation, strain ligaments, and there is the psychological aspect to consider. Do you know the proper way to use a flogger? Where to hit and not hit? How to play SSC (Safe, Sane and Consensual)? Do you know how to deal with a client who enters subspace? There are many things to consider. Amateurs should not be pro-dominants. Proper training is needed.
This is a really good article about professional Doms:
In my book RED TAPE, one of the characters in the story had been a professional dominatrix. Melissa Tadeshi was hired by the FLC, a secret organization within the White House specifically because of her education (lawyer) and her BDSM background. Not to mention her beauty and her tough attitude. She will have to deal with sadistic leaders and a number of dangerous people in her new position. She’s a secondary character in this first book and will appear in future books. Melissa helps to train the other members of the FLC. This organization uses sex scandal, coercion and blackmail to manipulate influential men or take them down. There is a loving, romantic BDSM aspect of this story as the characters explore and learn about this lifestyle for their mission, and also an edgier side when they use it for manipulating the bad guys.
